What Happened to Regular Chocolate?
Remember when buying chocolate was simple? When you could grab a Hershey's bar or a handful of M&M's without wondering what was hiding inside? That’s really not the case anymore. These days, chocolatiers are getting increasingly adventurous, and plenty of traditionalists would rather stick with the classics. With that, here are 20 modern chocolates that have Boomers wondering what happened to their favorite sweet treat.
1. Dubai Chocolate Bars
Dubai chocolate became an internet sensation thanks to its thick pistachio filling and crunchy shredded pastry. It all sounds good on paper, but between the unusual texture, premium price, and social media obsession, old-school chocolate lovers are just scratching their heads over why a candy bar needs a PR team.
2. Matcha Chocolate
Hey, don’t get us wrong—green tea is perfectly enjoyable on its own. But who decided that it needed to be coated in chocolate? Anyone expecting the familiar sweetness of a traditional bar will easily find the grassy taste rather disappointing. Matcha wasn’t a thing back in the day, either, so the new flavors don’t get anyone any more excited, either.
3. Chocolate With Bacon
Bacon belongs on the breakfast table! It’s bad enough for some traditionalists to bite into salty cocoa, but this took it so much further for no reason. Although sweet and salty combinations have plenty of fans, plenty of Boomers prefer their favorite breakfast meat and afternoon candy to remain separate.
4. Birthday Cake Chocolate Bars
You know, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. You have cake, and you have chocolate—no one said you needed to combine them! For anyone accustomed to straightforward milk chocolate, all that extra sweetness makes the finished product unnecessarily elaborate.
5. Chocolate With Potato Chips
There's nothing controversial about potato chips. Heck, you can even chow down on some chocolate in the same afternoon. But cow chips aren’t really a favorite among Boomers, especially those who don’t reside in Canada.

6. Ruby Chocolate
Traditional chocolate comes in recognizable colors, so ruby is a pretty weird sight. But depending on where you go, some chocolatiers have bars with naturally pink chocolate and a somewhat tart flavor that separates it from familiar varieties. It’s a little sour, too, so it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
7. Extra-Dark 90% Chocolate
People are still on the fence about whether dark chocolate is even any good, but the especially dark stuff is hard to back on any day. Extremely high cocoa percentages can test even experienced chocolate lovers, and someone who grew up enjoying the odd Hershey’s Kiss will undoubtedly wonder why anyone would voluntarily eat something so bitter.
8. Chocolate With Popping Candy
Pop Rocks were a big deal for a while, and though not everyone liked them, at least they had their time in the sun.
That doesn’t mean they should have their time in chocolate, though! Most people expect chocolate to melt comfortably in their mouths, not begin crackling the moment they take a bite.
9. Chocolate With Pretzels
It’s funny—for such a popular combo, you’d think more people would like it. But Boomers aren’t a fan of pretzel-filled bars; blame the salty, crunchy pieces. Old-timers accustomed to smooth chocolate tend to find the additional texture distracting rather than enjoyable.
10. Chocolate With Sea Salt
Remember what we said about salt in chocolate? Well, for some bars, that’s the whole gimmick. If anything, salted chocolate has become so popular that finding a bar without some kind of sea salt can be surprisingly difficult. Although the combo has its fans, traditionalists never needed it.

11. Cereal-Filled Chocolate Bars
Breakfast cereal used to come in cardboard boxes. Some even carried the odd toy inside. And yet, those days weren't exciting enough. Well, for Boomers who spent decades telling their children not to eat candy for breakfast, they won't appreciate seeing those two combined.
12. Chocolate With Chili Peppers
Spicy chocolate isn't exactly new, but modern candy makers have enthusiastically introduced it to mainstream sweet-toothed shoppers. We’re talking dark chocolate with cinnamon and chilies in some bars, and you bet the average old-timer isn’t a fan.
13. Oat Milk Chocolate
Milk chocolate usually has some kind of dairy, but that’s what makes the growing selection of plant-based alternatives so confusing for old-fashioned shoppers. That’s right, some brands carry oat milk chocolate bars, which use oat-based ingredients to create a creamy texture without conventional dairy milk.
14. Coffee-Flavored Chocolate
We already said that cake and chocolate were too much of a good thing, but coffee and chocolate somehow demonstrate our point even more!
Some varieties go so far as to carry espresso powder, roasted coffee beans, or concentrated coffee flavor can taste surprisingly bitter.
15. Sugar-Free Chocolate
At the end of the day, we know chocolate is bad for us. But that’s also why we love it so much—high sugar content included! Some sugar-free chocolates, however, use sweeteners such as maltitol or stevia that can produce a different taste or aftertaste from the regular stuff. Boomers want the familiar flavor of conventional chocolates, and a smaller piece of the original bar is more satisfying.
16. Chocolate With Peanut Butter Pieces
Don’t get us wrong. We’d never knock on Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. However, newer varieties packed with crushed cookies, crunchy fillings, and additional candy pieces are unnecessarily complicated. Old-school chocolate lovers never needed more ingredients.
17. Protein Chocolate Bars
Chocolate used to be something you enjoyed as a snack, but modern snack companies increasingly market chocolate-flavored products as sources of protein. It’s really not, though. You can count us among the Boomers who question why a sweet treat needs a nutritional sales pitch.
18. Salted Caramel Chocolate
Caramel-filled chocolates have been popular for years, but modern salted caramel has a noticeably different taste. Some contain substantial amounts of salt, creating a savory finish that competes with the sweetness of the caramel.
Anyone who grew up enjoying classic caramel-filled chocolate might find the newer versions a little too salty for their liking.
19. White Chocolate With Cookies
White chocolate is polarizing enough, and adding cookies wasn’t going to help sway people to the light side. While younger candy lovers might enjoy the combo, Boomers certainly don’t. Old-timers prefer classic milk chocolate; the absence of that recognizable taste is just enough to put them off.
20. Overloaded Chocolate Bars
Modern chocolate bars sometimes have so many ingredients that the chocolate itself becomes an afterthought. Between cookie dough, caramel, marshmallows, pretzels, and crunchy candy pieces, there's certainly no shortage of competing flavors—and Boomers have had enough!
