Greasy Food Isn’t Helping Your Hangover—Here’s What Will Actually Cure That Headache
That Energy Drink Won't Quell the Nausea
Ah, the dreaded hangover—the price we’ve all paid once or ten times for a fun night out. Now that you’re in bed with a headache and the spin cycle running in your stomach, food is probably the last thing on your mind. But like it or not, you need to eat, and there are surefire hangover remedies out there...but they probably aren't the old wives' tales you're thinking of. No, greasy food won't help, and no, drinking more alcohol won't cancel out whatever's still sloshing around your system. Don't you worry; we know exactly what will make you feel better.
Chicken Soup
A classic cure for the common cold, chicken soup also helps alleviate hangover symptoms. It makes sense when you think about it: chicken broth soothes an upset stomach, there's tons of protein and nutrients, and a bit of shredded ginger can kick things up another notch. Not to mention, chicken soup is hydrating, which is what you're aiming for.
Eggs
Eggs are a terrific source of protein and vitamins, both of which regulate your blood sugar levels and keep you energetic during the day. While you won't spring out of bed after a few scrambled eggs, you will combat lingering symptoms. They’re also chock full of cysteine, an amino acid that helps break down acetaldehyde, which is a gnarly byproduct of alcohol metabolism.
Water
Staying hydrated in these trying times is mission number one, and water is the easiest way to do it. We know it's probably the last thing you want, but keep a glass beside your best; it'll flush out any lingering toxins.
Bananas
Thanks to their high levels of potassium, bananas are a good way to restore electrolytes. They’re packed with natural sugars that help regulate your blood sugar levels and give you a little boost throughout the day, too. As an added bonus, if you can't get off the toilet, bananas help to plug your system by promoting healthy BMs.
Ginger
Honestly, what can't ginger do? For years, it's worked overtime to settle stomachs and quell dizzying nausea. That's reason enough alone to get it into your system—but it's also plenty versatie. Ginger chews, ginger tea, and even raw ginger in a smoothie can all stop the world from spinning.
Honey
Honey is a go-to remedy for a lot of hungover people, and the reason why is that it’s a great source of fructose. Fructose is absorbed immediately, thereby helping your body to break down alcohol. You don't need to guzzle a shot glass, but you can drizzle a bit atop some toast for a simple, effective remedy.
Whole Grains
You need carbs to recover from a hangover, and whole grains are the way to go. Sure, you can eat the stuff chock full of preservatives, but white bread is a pretty common enemy when you're already down for the count. Instead, try whole wheat toast, whole wheat crackers, granola, or oats for a great source of fiber and vitamins.
