10 Horrible Things About Greasy Spoon Diners & 10 Reasons They’re Actually The Best

10 Horrible Things About Greasy Spoon Diners & 10 Reasons They’re Actually The Best

Are You Team Diner?

Some dismiss diners as greasy spoons with mediocre food. Others swear that they’re cozy spots filled with coffee and comfort food. Whichever way you lean, diners come with the good and the bad—let’s explore them together.

1. The Food’s Hit or Miss

With menus that big and tables that packed, it’s not every day you get a quality home-cooked meal. You’re more likely to see undercooked food in a diner than you are in a restaurant—even if it’s a chain.

2. Poor Clientele

Some diners are open 24/7, which is a blessing and a curse. While it’s nice to pop in for coffee after a long shift, not everyone wants to eat around potentially belligerent customers. You never really know who will stumble in after happy hour.

3. Kitschy Decor

Some diners are packed with kitschy decor or outdated themes. A handful of customers may love the time capsule but others won’t appreciate being served by someone on roller skates. To each their own!

4. Uninspired Menus

No one expects five-star dishes on a diner menu, but they can still be uninspired. It’s hard to justify spending money on mugfuls of soup or chicken finger platters. It’s even worse when you sense something is out of the can…

5. Dirty Environment

Though not all diners are like this, some suffer from greasy menus (thank you, laminated pages) or sticky tables. Signs like these often indicate a poor sit-down spot, and they very easily turn customers away.

6. Greasy Food

Some diners really live up to their name of “greasy spoon.” Thankfully, not all diners are like this but the ones that are wreak havoc on our stomachs. Food dripping in grease means a surefire trip to the toilet—not something you want after a paid meal.

7. The Coffee Isn’t Great

Some diners do coffee perfectly and others simply don’t. Whether you come in after a 12-hour shift or just need a pick-me-up after a long day, the last thing customers need is lackluster coffee.

8. Ancient Furniture

Most diners are stuck in the past, but it appears their furniture suffered the same fate. Uncomfortable booths and creaky chairs are hardly welcoming—and they aren’t comfortable for your rear either.

9. Way Too Loud

While crowds are a sign of good business, it’s also hard to engage in conversation among several others. Diners and chains are notoriously loud, an annoying trait that can impede a quiet night out.

10. You Can Make it at Home

A lot of what you find on diner menus can be made at home. While that’s part of the charm for some customers, others might not take kindly to spending hard-earned money on a plate of scrambled eggs.

That said, plenty of diners are proud staples in their neighborhoods! Many withstand the changing decades and continue to stand tall—just one of their beloved aspects.

1. Affordable

Say what you want about the food, diners are affordable. Their modest menus boast cheap prices, a refreshing change of pace in today’s world. You may not get top-notch food, but you’ll certainly fill your belly on a few bucks.

2. Homemade Dishes

Sure, you can make these dishes at home…but did you? Diners offer familiar comfort food, often done better than what we whip up at home. There’s nothing quite like homemade turkey sandwiches or even a simple pancake dish.

3. Kind Staff

Even when they’re slammed, diner staff always take the time for you. They chit-chat, ask about your family, and share stories so funny you’d think you were best friends. It also warms our hearts to revisit and actually be remembered.

4. Open 24/7

You can often count on diners for 24/7 service. Maybe your flight got canceled and you can’t go home for the holidays. Maybe you just need a quaint place to enjoy some coffee. It doesn’t matter who you are, diners welcome those from all walks of life.

5. You Support Small Business

Most diners are family-owned businesses, which means you’re helping support the community. The best joints have stood the test of time, offering loyal customers a warm smile and an even warmer slice of pie.

6. They’re Comfortable

Sure, the decor is a little outdated. Your table probably has a wobbly leg. But a diner’s comfort is unmatched by five-star locations and chain restaurants. Sometimes you don’t want a steak dinner—sometimes you just want a place that feels like home.

7. All-Day Breakfast

Who doesn’t love breakfast for dinner? Even if it’s well after hours, most diners have all-day feasts to satisfy those waffle cravings. You might be able to make bacon and eggs at home, but that diner just saved you the hassle.

8. Huge Menus

We know, we know—usually huge menus are a bad thing. Diners are the exception, though. Honestly, it’s just nice to know there’s a place with veal sandwiches and Western omelets.

9. Amazing Desserts

We understand if you’d rather not order meatloaf from a diner. Do yourself a favor, though, and at least indulge in their pie. Diners usually have a plethora to choose from, all of which are homemade and warm the soul.

10. Nothing Changes

You wanna go where everybody knows your name. Look no further than your local diner! Not only does the staff rarely change, but diners don’t switch out dishes the way restaurants do. What’s more comfortable than your favorite food in a familiar spot?
