10 Foods Men Pretend Are Too Girly & 10 Women Pretend Are Too Manly
When Your Food Order Apparently Says Something About You
Food should be about what tastes good, but somewhere along the way, certain dishes ended up with some pretty ridiculous gender stereotypes. Apparently, ordering a colorful salad makes you less masculine, while enjoying a massive steak is a manly thing to do. Of course, there's nothing inherently masculine or feminine about food, but that hasn't stopped people from having opinions about what men and women should eat. Here are 10 foods some men pretend are too girly and 10 that some women pretend are too manly, even though plenty of people enjoy both.
1. Strawberry Yogurt Parfaits
There's something about layers of pink yogurt, fresh berries, and granola that some guys apparently find too feminine to order in public. Those same men might happily eat a giant bowl of sugary cereal, but a parfait suddenly feels embarrassing. At the end of the day, it's just a perfectly good breakfast that happens to look pretty in a glass.
2. Quiche
For decades, quiche has had a strangely feminine reputation, despite being packed with eggs, cheese, and sometimes bacon. Some men would rather order an omelet than admit they enjoy a slice of this French classic. Considering that both dishes use many of the same ingredients, it's hard to see what all the fuss is about.
3. Cupcakes
A giant slice of chocolate cake is perfectly acceptable, but put that same cake into a colorful paper wrapper with some pink frosting, and certain guys suddenly aren't interested. Cupcakes are often associated with bridal showers, baby showers, and cute little bakeries, which probably doesn't help their reputation. Of course, those concerns tend to disappear pretty quickly when someone brings a box of free cupcakes into the office.
4. Acai Bowls
Bright purple acai bowls topped with strawberries, coconut flakes, and chia seeds have earned a reputation as the ultimate Instagram-friendly breakfast. Some guys write them off as something only fitness influencers and trendy women order. Once you get past the colorful presentation, though, you're really just enjoying a refreshing bowl of fruit with a few extra toppings.
5. Macarons
These delicate French cookies come in pastel colors and are usually displayed in fancy little boxes, which apparently makes them too feminine for some men. You'll often find them at weddings, afternoon teas, and upscale bakeries, adding to that image. It's amazing how quickly someone can forget about those stereotypes, though, after tasting a really good pistachio macaron.
6. Caprese Salad
Fresh mozzarella, juicy tomatoes, and basil shouldn't raise any eyebrows, but some men still associate ordering a salad with eating too lightly. Caprese salad seems especially vulnerable to this judgment because it's elegant and usually arrives beautifully arranged. Put those exact same ingredients on a pizza, however, and suddenly nobody has anything to say.
7. Chocolate-Covered Strawberries
Romantic dinners and Valentine's Day have made chocolate-covered strawberries seem more like something men are supposed to buy for women rather than enjoy themselves. Some guys might think twice about ordering them for dessert, particularly when they're out with friends. But really, what's so feminine about eating fresh strawberries covered in delicious melted chocolate?
8. Avocado Toast
Few breakfast dishes have become as closely associated with trendy brunch culture as avocado toast. Thanks to its popularity on social media and reputation as a wellness favorite, some men dismiss it as a stereotypically feminine choice. Add a fried egg, chili flakes, and a little bacon, though, and even the biggest skeptics might start reconsidering their opinion.
9. Frozen Yogurt
Frozen yogurt shops are usually packed with colorful toppings, fruit combinations, and cheerful decor that can make the whole experience feel a little too cute for certain guys. Some men would rather grab a regular ice cream cone than spend time picking out rainbow sprinkles and gummy bears. What's funny is that frozen yogurt can be every bit as sweet and indulgent as traditional ice cream, especially once you start piling on the toppings.
10. Afternoon Tea Sandwiches
Tiny cucumber sandwiches with the crusts removed probably aren't the first thing you picture when imagining a stereotypically masculine lunch. Their connection to fancy tea parties and elegant hotels hasn't exactly helped change that perception. However, there's absolutely no reason a man can't appreciate a good smoked salmon or egg salad sandwich just because someone decided to cut it into little triangles.
Now that we've talked about foods that have been unfairly labeled "feminine," let's talk about the ones that are considered masculine.
1. Giant Ribeye Steaks
A thick, juicy ribeye has long been associated with steakhouses, big appetites, and men who take their grilling extremely seriously. Some women might feel a little self-conscious ordering the biggest steak on the menu, especially if they're on a first date. That doesn't mean they wouldn't happily finish every bite of a perfectly cooked piece of beef, though.
2. Buffalo Wings
Buffalo wings have practically become synonymous with sports bars, football games, and groups of guys gathered around a television. Between the sticky sauce and the inevitable mess, they're not always seen as the most traditionally feminine thing to order. Plenty of women love spicy wings, of course, even if getting sauce all over their fingers isn't exactly ideal when they're trying to make a good impression on a date.
3. Beef Jerky
Gas stations, road trips, and outdoor adventures have all helped give beef jerky a distinctly masculine reputation. Even the packaging tends to feature rugged imagery, bold flavors, and promises of extra protein, making it seem like a snack designed specifically for men. Women who enjoy jerky might not make a big deal about it, but that doesn't mean they aren't keeping a bag handy for their next road trip.
4. Double Bacon Cheeseburgers
Ordering a massive burger piled high with bacon, cheese, and multiple beef patties can feel like a pretty bold choice when everyone else is picking something lighter. Some women worry they'll be judged for having a big appetite, especially when they're eating around people they don't know very well. It's a shame that this kind of pressure can turn something as simple as enjoying a delicious burger into a decision that requires second-guessing.

5. Chili Cheese Dogs
Chili cheese dogs aren't exactly the neatest meal you can order, especially when they're overflowing with beef chili, melted cheese, and chopped onions. Their connection to stadiums, backyard cookouts, and casual American diners has also given them a somewhat masculine image. If you're someone who loves a good hot dog, though, there's really no reason to pretend the fully loaded version doesn't sound even better.
16. Pork Rinds
Crunchy, salty pork rinds have long been associated with old-school bars, particularly when they're served alongside a cold beer during a football game. Their popularity among low-carb dieters has introduced them to a wider audience, but that traditionally masculine reputation hasn't completely disappeared. Some women might reach for popcorn or potato chips instead, even though they'd be perfectly happy snacking on pork rinds.
17. Philly Cheesesteaks
A traditional Philly cheesesteak comes loaded with thinly sliced beef, melted cheese, and sometimes grilled onions, making it one seriously filling sandwich. Its connection to sports fans and casual sandwich shops has helped give it a pretty masculine reputation over the years. Women who love a hearty meal shouldn't feel pressured to order something smaller just because someone might think a cheesesteak isn't particularly ladylike.
18. Barbecue Ribs
There's really no graceful way to eat a rack of barbecue ribs, which might explain why some women avoid ordering them in certain situations. Between the sticky fingers, sauce-covered napkins, and occasional piece of meat stuck between your teeth, they're not exactly associated with traditional expectations of feminine table manners. Still, missing out on some excellent barbecue just because it might get a little messy seems like a pretty disappointing compromise.

19. Breakfast Burritos
Oversized breakfast burritos stuffed with eggs, sausage, potatoes, cheese, and hot sauce are often promoted as the ultimate hearty morning meal. Their enormous portions can make them seem like something designed for men with huge appetites rather than women simply looking for breakfast. In reality, there's nothing wrong with wanting something filling to start your day, especially when it tastes this good.
20. Meat Lover's Pizza
When a pizza arrives covered in pepperoni, sausage, bacon, and ground beef, you can usually tell it's aimed at people who think there's no such thing as too much meat. That image has traditionally leaned masculine, particularly in advertisements centered around sports nights and groups of hungry guys. Some women might feel more comfortable ordering a veggie or margherita pizza when they're out with others, even if they'd much rather have another slice of the meat lover's option.
