Growing up we were told that it's rude to play with our food but when it comes to parties, we tend to break the rules. Kids of all ages have a ton of fun playing food-inspired games. From messy guessing games to food races, here's a list of tasty games to play at your next dinner party.
1. Donuts On A String
Do not underestimate the amount of hilarity that comes out of a game of donuts and string. The donuts on a string game makes healthy competition out of a sugary snack. Hang a donut from a string placed over a bar or curtain rod and have a donut master control it. The participant has to try and bite the donut without using their hands as the donut bounces up and down hitting their face.
2. The Licorice Game
For this licorice race you'll need partners of two and long licorice ropes. This game goes down a treat with young kids. Facing your partner, each of you has one end of the licorice in your mouth. When the race begins you start to eat the licorice until you reach each other. The team who consumes their licorice first is the winner!
3. Dessert Treasure Hunt
Send your little pirates off on a tasty treasure hunt. Fill a treasure chest with treats and hide it somewhere clever. With a map and some clues, the dessert hunters can find their way to the edible prize. It's a fun way to get the kids to earn their dessert.
4. Mystery Dinner Menu
A mystery dinner menu makes an interesting dinner party. As the host you create a menu of code names that you give to each of your guests. Without knowing what each name represents, your hungry guests will select an order of each item for each of the courses. You could end up with a knife and soup or dessert as your first course.
5. Mystery Taste Game
Your taste buds are the players of this game! For this mystery game you need a blindfold and a selection of ingredients. The blindfolded participants have to guess the food they eat without looking. Foods that work well are flavored jams, herbs and spices, and baby food, to name a few.
6. Lemon or Egg & Spoon Race
A good old fashioned egg and spoon race is a hit at any outdoor party. You can use lemons for the same thrill and less mess and waste. You know the drill–– runners have to race to the finish line while balancing an egg or lemon on their spoon.
7. Food Charades
It's like traditional charades but with a foodie twist! You act out products like vegetables and candy without saying a word and have your audience guess what you are. You'll be surprised at how challenging and funny it is to act out a cucumber or a bowl of popcorn.
8. Texture Guessing Game
This game can get delightfully messy. The game works best with a box with a hole that your arm can fit through. The host of the game places various foods in bowls that they alternate behind the secrecy of the box. The participant sticks their hand through the box and into the bowl and has to guess what the food is.
9. Murder Mystery Dinner Party
A murder mystery party is a game that gets started as soon as the invitations are sent. With an abundance of versions online and in stores, you can choose your favorite theme and throw a fabulous dinner party. Guests dress up in character and clues are revealed during each course until the murderer is found.
10. Marshmallow Toss
All you need are two teams and a bag of marshmallows. Players stand facing each other with a set distance between them. The game is played by tossing marshmallows towards the other team. A team gets a point every time a marshmallow is caught.
11. Candy Count
This game is simple and effective. You can use as many or as little jars of candy as you want. The gist is that your guests have to guess how many candies are in the jar. The more jars you fill, the more counting you need to do. The winner with the closest guess takes home the treat jar.
12. Bobbing For Apples
Bobbing for apples is a classic party game that may have been forgotten after the pandemic. However, if germs don't bother you too much, this game is a lot of fun. Fill a bucket with water and floating apples. Without using their hands, participants try to pick up an apple using their teeth. With the buoyancy of the water, the apples are challenging to bite, resulting in some refreshing head dunks.
13. The Chocolate Bar Game
This game is cheap and cheerful. You need to scrounge your house for oven mitts, a knife and fork, dice, and a chocolate bar. To play the game, participants sit around a table with an unwrapped chocolate bar in the middle. Whenever a 6 is rolled on the dice, the player puts on the oven mitts and tries to eat as much chocolate as they can with the knife and fork before the next 6 is rolled.
14. Oreo Face Race
This simple Oreo game will give you the giggles. Before the race begins, place an Oreo on your foreheads. The race involves facial movements as you try to direct the cookie down to your mouth. The player who takes the first tasty bite is the winner.
15. Pie In The Face
Pie in the face is a throwback to all American summer carnivals. Bring the fair to your backyard and have a pie throwing competition just for fun or to raise money for a fundraiser. Treat some lucky friends to a pie or two in the face while your other friends practice their throw.
16. Candy Unwrap Game
You have to work for your candy in this game. The goal of the game is to successfully unwrap the candy before the timer runs out. The challenge–– you have to wear oven mitts and the host can wrap the candy as difficult as they please.
17. M&M Chopstick Race
Tiny objects and chopsticks are not an easy combo. To win this food race, all you need to do is empty your bowl of M&Ms into the other bowl before the other players do. The chopsticks make this simple candy game a harder challenge than it may seem.
18. Baking Decorator
A baking party is fun for all ages. You can make cookies, cupcakes, or any treats you want to decorate. With cookie cutters, icing, sprinkles, and other toppings, you can create all kinds of edible masterpieces. Cake and cookie decorating is a creative activity with a tasty reward at the end.
19. Marshmallow Spaghetti Tower
This is activity involves creativity and problem-solving skills–– the kids will have no idea they're learning as they play! Little architects can build structures out of raw spaghetti and marshmallows. With just a couple ingredients, kids can have a ton of fun while using their brain.
20. Gingerbread House Competition
A gingerbread house competition is the perfect game for the holidays or any time of year. Challenge your family and friends to an artistic and delicious challenge where you create dream homes out of gingerbread, icing, and candy. In the end, everyone's a winner when they get to eat their masterpieces.
