20 "Diet" Foods That Are Secretly Sabotaging Your Waistline

20 "Diet" Foods That Are Secretly Sabotaging Your Waistline

The Health Halo Is Doing Heavy Lifting

Most people don't get derailed by pizza. They get derailed by the food they eat on purpose, believing it's helping. A granola bar in the afternoon and a smoothie after the gym both feel like good calls, and neither one gets counted the way a slice of cake would. Over a few months that adds up to more than the pizza ever would have. Here's 20 foods with a health reputation they never earned.

1. Granola

Granola starts as oats and then gets held together with oil and syrup, which is how a modest bowl clears 300 calories. The serving size printed on the box is usually a quarter cup, roughly what fits in a shot glass. Nobody has ever poured that.

2. Store-Bought Smoothies

A large smoothie from a chain can carry more sugar than a can of soda, most of it from fruit puree and a sorbet-style base. Blending also removes the chewing that normally tells your brain to slow down. You can drink 500 calories in four minutes and feel like you had a snack.

3. Flavored Yogurt

Plain Greek yogurt is one of the better things in the dairy case. The fruit-on-the-bottom version of the same cup can add four teaspoons of sugar under a layer of strawberry jam. Buy it plain and stir in the fruit yourself.

4. Protein Bars

A lot of protein bars are candy bars with whey powder in them. The ones coated in chocolate with a caramel layer often run 250 calories and 20 grams of sugar. Sugar alcohols keep the label looking clean and give plenty of people stomach trouble.

5. Dried Fruit

Drying fruit takes out the water and leaves everything else behind, so a small handful of mango slices can equal half a fresh one. Most brands sweeten it before packaging anyway. It sits in the bulk bins looking rustic and costs you like dessert.

6. Trail Mix

Trail mix makes sense on a long hike, where the point is dense calories you can carry. At a desk it's a different food. Two handfuls of cashews and chocolate chunks can run 400 calories.

7. Fat-Free Dressing

When the fat comes out of a dressing, sugar and thickeners usually go in to replace it. Fat also helps you absorb the vitamins in the salad, so stripping it out works against the vegetables. A regular olive oil vinaigrette is the better call.

8. Veggie Straws

Veggie straws are mostly potato starch with a little vegetable powder for color. Calorie for calorie they land in about the same place as regular chips. The vegetable content amounts to almost nothing.

9. Specialty Sushi Rolls

Sushi is a reasonable meal until the roll shows up fried and covered in spicy mayo. Sweet glazes and the sugar in seasoned rice add more on top of that. Two specialty rolls can pass 900 calories.

10. Multigrain Bread

Multigrain means more than one grain went into the loaf, and nothing beyond that. The flour can still be refined, and molasses gives it the brown color people associate with whole wheat. Look for "whole" as the first word in the ingredient list.

11. Coconut Water

Coconut water gets treated as an upgrade over soda, and it does offer some meaningful potassium. A bottle also carries around 15 grams of sugar. Unless you've been sweating hard, water does the same job for less.

12. Rice Cakes

Rice cakes are low in calories and low in almost everything else. There's no fat or protein to slow things down, so they raise blood sugar fast and leave you hungry again soon after. One with peanut butter on it works better than four plain.

13. Diet Soda

Diet soda has no calories, and that part holds up. The problem tends to be what comes after. Some people find the sweetness keeps their taste for sugar going, and the savings get spent on dessert.

14. Bran Muffins

A bakery bran muffin has fiber in it and the structure of cake. The ones in the case by the register often run 500 calories once you count the oil and sugar. A homemade one is a different food entirely.

15. Turkey Bacon

Turkey bacon has less fat than pork bacon but it usually has more sodium. It also shrinks a lot in the pan, so people cook five or six strips instead of two. Whatever you saved is gone by then.

16. Almond Butter

Almond butter is good food and worth keeping in the kitchen. It also runs about 100 calories a tablespoon, and most people don't measure it. Two heavy swipes on toast can be 300 calories before anything else goes on.

17. Açaí Bowls

An açaí bowl is a thick smoothie topped with granola and usually honey. A medium at most shops falls between 600 and 800 calories. Ordering the small and skipping the honey cuts that close to half.

18. Baked Chips

Baked chips cut the fat and keep the salt and refined starch. They also feel like a free choice, so the bag goes faster. A whole baked bag comes out worse than a small handful of the fried ones.

19. Frozen "Lean" Dinners

A 250-calorie frozen dinner works if it fills you up. Most don't, because the portion is small and there isn't much protein in it. A side of vegetables or a boiled egg does more for you than a second tray at nine o'clock.

20. Kombucha

Kombucha is sold on gut health, and a bottle can still carry 12 grams of sugar. The taller ones usually count as two servings, which is easy to miss on the label. One every afternoon adds up over a month.
