The Foods Dads Seem to Love More Than Anyone Else
Every family has at least a handful of foods that seem to belong almost exclusively to Dad. Whether it's something he insists on grilling himself, a snack he always keeps around, or a meal he's been ordering at the same restaurant for decades, certain dishes have become known as dad favorites. Some are old-fashioned classics, while others are closely associated with backyard barbecues, weekend projects, and unusual food combinations. Of course, anyone can enjoy these foods, but there's something about these 20 that makes them especially popular with fathers.

1. Beef Jerky
For whatever reason, dads seem particularly enthusiastic about dried meat, especially when it comes in a giant resealable bag. Beef jerky is convenient, full of protein, and doesn't need refrigeration, which likely explains part of its popularity. You'll often find Dad keeping a secret stash in his car, garage, or desk drawer for whenever he needs a quick snack.
2. Grilled Bratwurst
Few things make a dad happier than being in charge of the backyard grill, especially when bratwurst is on the menu. He probably has strong opinions about how long each sausage needs to cook and whether it should be simmered in beer beforehand. Don't be surprised if he also insists that there's only one type of mustard worth serving with it.
3. Meatloaf
Meatloaf has been a reliable family dinner for generations, but it's also become a favorite among dads who appreciate a traditional home-cooked meal. There's something satisfying about a hearty dish made with ground beef, breadcrumbs, and a generous amount of ketchup. If your father has his own meatloaf recipe, there's a good chance he thinks it's better than anything you'd order at a restaurant.
4. Salted Peanuts
A bowl of salted peanuts might not seem particularly exciting, but plenty of dads consider them a must-have snack. They're especially popular during football games, fishing trips, and lazy afternoons spent in front of the television. Some fathers even buy them in bulk because those little grocery store containers never seem to last long enough.
5. Steak
Ask a dad how he prefers his steak cooked, and you might end up listening to a lengthy explanation of proper grilling techniques. Many fathers take serious pride in choosing the right cut, seasoning it well, and cooking it to the perfect temperature. Ordering a well-done steak in front of a particularly passionate steak-loving dad might even get you a disapproving look.
6. Sardines
While younger generations haven't exactly developed an overwhelming love for canned sardines, plenty of dads still swear by them. These little fish are inexpensive, nutritious, and easy to enjoy straight from the tin with a few crackers. If your father loves sardines, he probably can't understand why everyone suddenly leaves the kitchen whenever he opens a can.
7. Chili
Every dad who regularly makes chili seems convinced that his recipe deserves some kind of recognition. He might spend hours adjusting the spices, trying different beans, or arguing that authentic chili shouldn't contain beans in the first place. No matter how it turns out, you're probably going to hear about his secret ingredient more than once.
8. Liver & Onions
Liver and onions is one of those traditional meals that many people immediately associate with their fathers or grandfathers. Its strong flavor isn't everyone's favorite, but longtime fans often argue that younger people simply haven't tasted a properly cooked version. Dad might even order it whenever he sees it on a diner menu because nobody else in the family wants to make it.
9. Grocery Store Rotisserie Chicken
There's something about a grocery store rotisserie chicken that dads seem to find impossible to resist. It's affordable, already cooked, and makes for an easy dinner without having to spend any time in the kitchen. Some fathers even have a favorite grocery store they swear makes the best one, and they'll happily bring home a whole chicken whether anyone asked for it or not.
10. Corned Beef Hash
Corned beef hash has an old-fashioned diner appeal that some fathers simply can't resist. The combination of chopped meat, crispy potatoes, and fried eggs makes it an especially satisfying breakfast. It's also the kind of meal Dad might happily throw together using whatever leftovers happen to be sitting in the refrigerator.
11. Full Breakfast
Some dads aren't satisfied with a quick bowl of cereal or a piece of toast in the morning. They'd much rather sit down to a full breakfast with eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, and a helping of beans. If your father has a favorite diner, there's a good chance he's been ordering the same enormous breakfast there for years, and probably paying impressively little for it, too.
12. Smoked Ribs
Smoking ribs can easily become an all-day project for dads who take their barbecue duties seriously. Between choosing the right wood, preparing the seasoning, and checking the smoker, the process can occupy an entire Saturday. By the time dinner is ready, everyone has probably heard several updates about the meat's internal temperature, whether they asked or not.

13. Bologna Sandwiches
There's a whole generation of fathers who still enjoy a simple bologna sandwich on white bread. Add a little mustard, perhaps a slice of American cheese, and you've got lunch without much preparation. Some dads even like frying the bologna first, which they insist makes an already delicious sandwich taste even better.
14. Mixed Nuts
Mixed nuts have somehow become a permanent fixture in dad snack collections, particularly during the holidays. You'll often catch fathers picking out all the cashews while leaving everyone else with a container full of peanuts. Those oversized plastic jars also have a tendency to stick around long after the original snacks are gone.
15. French Dip Sandwiches
A French dip sandwich has everything many dads want in a satisfying, straightforward lunch. With thinly sliced roast beef, a toasted roll, and warm au jus for dipping, there's plenty of flavor without an overly complicated ingredient list. Fathers who find a restaurant serving an especially good version often end up returning to that same spot for years.
16. Basic Lager
It's not technically a food, but there's something about cracking open a cold beer after a long day that plenty of dads seem to appreciate. Whether they're grilling in the backyard, watching football, or relaxing after mowing the lawn, beer often becomes part of the routine. Some fathers have been drinking the same brand for decades and have absolutely no interest in trying anything new, no matter how many craft beers you recommend.
17. Pork Rinds
Pork rinds have earned a reputation as a classic dad snack, particularly among fathers who enjoy something salty and crunchy. Made from fried or roasted pork skin, they've been a popular snack in different cultures for generations. Your dad might even claim they're better than potato chips, although that probably won't stop him from reaching for a bag of chips later.
18. Salisbury Steak
Salisbury steak is another comforting dinner that seems especially popular with fathers who grew up enjoying traditional American meals. Typically served with brown gravy and mashed potatoes, it's a filling dish that doesn't need anything particularly fancy. If Dad notices it on a restaurant menu, there's a good chance he'll start reminiscing about how his mother used to prepare it.
19. Baked Beans
Baked beans have become a backyard barbecue staple, and plenty of dads seem to have unusually strong opinions about how they should taste. Some prefer theirs sweet and smoky, while others insist on adding bacon, onions, or a generous splash of barbecue sauce. If your father has a favorite recipe, he probably won't hesitate to explain why it's better than anything you could buy in a can.
20. Canned Vienna Sausages
Vienna sausages are one of those old-school pantry staples that people either love or can't quite understand. Some fathers grew up eating them as affordable snacks and never really lost their appreciation for the tiny canned sausages. Whether they're enjoyed straight from the can or served with crackers and hot sauce, Dad probably sees nothing unusual about still eating them all these years later.
