10 Things Boomers Ate For School Lunch & 10 Things Gen Z Are Eating
How School Lunch Has Changed
School lunches have changed quite a bit across generations, thanks to shifting food trends, school policies, convenience, and what families can easily pack in the morning. Baby Boomers grew up with plenty of sandwiches, canned or packaged foods, and simple snacks that were easy to put into a lunchbox. Gen Z has inherited a much wider range of options, including newer snacks, different types of sandwiches, and foods influenced by social media and international cuisines.
1. Peanut Butter And Jelly Sandwiches
Probably one of the most classic sandwiches that Baby Boomers had for lunch was peanut butter and jelly. It was cheap and could be thrown together really quickly before you left for school. All you had to do was make your sandwich and throw it in your lunchbox.
2. Bologna Sandwiches
Another sandwich that was packed in American lunchboxes during the Baby Boomer generation was the bologna sandwich. It consisted of a few pieces of bologna on bread. Maybe with cheese on top or mustard on it, but it got the job done.

3. Canned Soup In A Thermos
Kids could pack their soup from home in a thermos. Since there weren't microwave ovens at the time to heat up your soup, you could just pack your soup from home. You probably had canned tomato soup, chicken noodle soup, or another type of soup that you could pack from your house.
4. Tuna Salad Sandwiches
You can turn a can of tuna into a sandwich, and that's a good enough lunch for some. Maybe add mayo and some celery or something on it, and it's a lunch. It will probably smell pretty bad when you open it at your table, but it's food.
5. Ham And Cheese Sandwiches
Another lunch that Baby Boomers ate was ham and cheese. You could eat it cold and throw an apple or some chips with it as well. Parents who were making a bunch of lunches that morning could throw together a quick sandwich like this.
6. Deviled Eggs
Kids had deviled eggs packed in their lunch boxes as well. If your mom made deviled eggs that day, you could always take one to school with you. Eggs are high in protein, so it's a good thing to eat, but they may not be as easy to pack in your lunch box as, say, a bag of chips.
7. Fruit In A Lunchbox
As you could imagine, most kids packed fruit in their lunch boxes. You could pack an apple, banana, orange, or even some grapes. All of which are great examples of food that are easy to pack for school.
8. Potato Chips
Kids were also packing potato chips in their lunch boxes during the Baby Boomer generation.
It's an easy thing to grab and throw in your lunch box with your sandwich. There's no reason that Baby Boomers wouldn't have wanted potato chips in their lunch box.
9. Homemade Cookies
Another thing that Baby Boomers may have brought to school is homemade cookies. If you made cookies, you could always take some with you to school. Maybe some chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal cookies, or peanut butter cookies would go great with lunch.
10. Milk
Milk was closely associated with school meals for generations of American children. Schools commonly served milk alongside cafeteria lunches, and individual cartons became a familiar part of the school dining experience. For kids who brought lunch from home, milk could also be included when refrigeration and transportation made it practical.
Now that we talked about 10 things boomers ate, here are 10 things Gen Z ate!
1. Turkey Wraps
There are many foods that Generation Z knows that were not packed in lunches during the Baby Boomer generation. One of those foods is the turkey wrap. You can pack a turkey wrap in your lunch box and have multiple things inside it like cheese, lettuce, veggies, and sauce.
2. Avocado Toast
Avocado toast became a highly recognizable food trend during Gen Z's childhood and teenage years. It isn't necessarily an everyday school lunch for everyone, but avocado has become much more common in younger generations' meals than it was in many older lunchboxes.
When packed carefully, avocado can also become part of a sandwich, toast-based meal, or bowl.
3. Chicken Caesar Wraps
Chicken Caesar wraps are a popular lunch that you can pack. Just put grilled chicken, lettuce, Parmesan, and Caesar dressing on top and throw it all in a tortilla. Another easy lunch that you can make and pack for your kids to take to school.
4. Protein Bars
If your kids need something that they can eat fast and doesn't require you to cook something, protein bars are perfect for students. There are so many different types of protein bars you can get.
5. Fruit And Yogurt
Fruit and yogurt are another thing you can pack for lunch. You can buy little yogurts and put them in your kid's lunch box, and they will love it. Again, there are so many choices of yogurts you can buy.
6. Sushi
Another food that kids have had that our parents didn't know about is sushi. There are many types of sushi you can pack for lunch, maybe just plain veggies. But sushi has been gaining popularity with younger kids and is definitely something that you can pack for lunch.
7. Pasta Salad
Cold pasta salad works particularly well as a packed lunch because it doesn't have to be served hot. Students might have pasta mixed with vegetables, cheese, chicken, or a dressing depending on what their family prefers.
It also gives leftovers from dinner a second life instead of requiring an entirely separate meal.
8. Hummus And Vegetables
Kids in Generation Z know hummus and like it as well. So why not pack it for lunch? Throw in some carrots and cucumbers, and you're good to go. Give your kids a change from the usual lunch box food, and they will thank you for it.
9. Smoothies
With the technology we have now, we can pack smoothies for lunch as well. Make some fruit smoothies for your kids and throw them in the lunch box. It's a good lunch to have if you don't like eating something big when you wake up.
10. Snack Boxes
Many people pack snack boxes now for lunch. They have multiple items in one lunch box instead of one big sandwich. They can pack cheese, crackers, fruit, veggie sticks, etc., and even dessert in their lunch box.
