Some American Foods Just Need a Cold Beer
Michelob Ultra isn't the kind of beer that wants to compete with your plate, which is exactly why certain favorites work so well beside it. Salty, spicy, grilled, and fried foods give this light lager plenty to work with, especially when you're chowing down on something that demands a cold sip. Other American classics, however, are so aggressively rich that pairing them with this beloved beer leaves both sides of the table worse off. Come with us as we explore which pairings make sense, and which ones should never be tried.
1. Buffalo Wings
Buffalo wings pair well with almost anything, don’t they? They bring vinegar, butter, salt, and plenty of heat, while Michelob Ultra’s light enough to cool everything down without drowning out the flavor. There's a reason cold American lager and wings have become such a familiar game-day combination!
2. Chicago-Style Hot Dogs
A Chicago dog has a lot happening between its poppy seed bun. We’re talking beef frank, mustard, relish, onion, tomato, pickle spear, peppers, and celery salt. It sounds busy, but Michelob Ultra's mild profile doesn't introduce another competing flavor, so all those toppings still get their moment.

3. Nashville Hot Chicken
Few foods make a cold beer better than Nashville hot chicken. The cayenne-heavy seasoning brings serious heat, yes, but the crisp carbonation and restrained flavor of Michelob Ultra offer a welcome break. Order the chicken with white bread and pickles, and you've got an unmistakably American combo.

4. Maryland Crab Cakes
A properly made Maryland crab cake puts lump crab meat ahead of excessive breadcrumbs, usually with Old Bay providing its familiar taste. It’s not something you want to mess with, and the dish is delicate enough that a heavier beer gets distracting pretty quickly. Luckily, Michelob Ultra largely stays out of the crab's way.
5. Wisconsin Fried Cheese Curds
We know it sounds insane to mix cheese and beer, but hear us out on this. Fresh Wisconsin cheese curds are already good, but dropping them into batter and frying them creates the bar snack Michelob Ultra deserves. Their salty, fatty richness also benefits from something cold and uncomplicated. If there's ranch on the table, nobody's going to complain about that either.
6. Texas Frito Pie
Frito pie doesn't need a parade to announce itself. It carries on well enough with crunchy Fritos covered with chili, shredded cheese, and onions. Michelob Ultra helps keep that combo from getting too salty or rich, particularly once the chili starts kicking in. Eating it directly from the bag only makes the pairing more casual.

7. Fried Catfish and Hush Puppies
A Southern fish fry practically asks for something fizzy alongside the basket. Cornmeal-crusted catfish has plenty of fried richness, and hush puppies contribute sweetness with another layer of crunch. So, what’s missing? A light lager that won't overpower!
8. Carolina Pulled Pork Sliders
We hate to say it, but pulled pork gets heavy quickly. That is, however, exactly why Michelob Ultra works best here; its lightness doesn't interfere with the smoked pork. Serve the meat on little buns with slaw, and you've got an easy backyard meal that chases away any Sunday blues.

9. New Mexico Green Chile Cheeseburgers
The green chile cheeseburger turns a familiar staple into something distinctly Southwestern. We’re talking roasted Hatch chiles with enough earthy heat to make a cold Michelob Ultra useful, all while the beer keeps to itself without drowning out the flavor. It's particularly satisfying when the burger comes straight off the grill.
10. Corn Dogs
Say what you want about them, but a corn dog combines salty sausage, slightly sweet cornmeal batter, and deep-fried crunch in one very American package. It’s okay; this is a safe space to admit you love them. It’s also safe to say that Michelob Ultra keeps that richness from sitting too heavily.
That’s not to say that every little dish pairs well with what’s in the fridge. Let’s dive into which foods make no sense with this lager!
1. Pecan Pie
Pecan pie comes loaded with corn syrup, brown sugar, butter, and toasted nuts, which means that a crisp Michelob Ultra is too light to contribute much else. Save the beer for dinner and give the pie a cup of coffee instead.
2. Biscuits and Gravy
Few breakfasts commit to richness like fluffy biscuits buried under gravy. Against all that milk, flour, pork fat, and buttery biscuit, Michelob Ultra can seem strangely thin, though. Even when you’re enjoying these bad boys for dinner, beer kind of makes no sense.
3. Ambrosia Salad
Ambrosia can contain a lot of ingredients you don’t want to pair with booze: canned pineapple, mandarin oranges, marshmallows, coconut, whipped topping, and sometimes maraschino cherries. Introducing beer to that sweet mixture does nothing to bring those ingredients together.

4. Chicken-Fried Steak
Chicken-fried steak takes beef, breads it, fries it, and then covers the whole thing in thick country gravy. Sounds good, right? Well, it is—so long as you leave the lager out of it! A more flavorful beer could potentially stand up to that much fried meat and cream, but Michelob Ultra tends to disappear beside it.

5. Cincinnati Chili Five-Way
Cincinnati chili already has an unusual collection of flavors thanks to its thin, heavily seasoned sauce. Don’t forget that a five-way adds shredded cheddar, onions, and kidney beans, creating enough competing flavors before a beverage even enters the picture. Michelob Ultra isn't terrible with it, but it doesn't have enough character to make this specialty any better.
6. Sweet Potato Casserole
Thanksgiving sweet potato casserole has all the good stuff we want. It’s slathered in brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, and a browned blanket of miniature marshmallows! The thing is, those dessert-like flavors make a crisp light lager seem oddly bitter and watery by comparison.
7. Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches
A PB&J may be one of America's most recognizable lunches, but adulthood doesn't mean downing beer with everything you loved in grade school. Peanut butter coats your mouth, jelly follows it, and Michelob Ultra has very little flavor intensity capable of breaking through either one. Milk is what you want here.
8. Tuna Noodle Casserole
Tuna noodle casserole brings together egg noodles, canned tuna, cream of mushroom soup, and some kind of crunchy topping in one proudly old-school dinner. Though it’s tasty on its own, the creamy and earthy combo doesn't give Michelob Ultra an obvious role to play. If anything, the beer can taste almost nonexistent next to the sauce.
9. Pumpkin Pie
If pecan pie’s a no-go, you bet that pumpkin pie isn’t far behind. This staple relies on warming spices like cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves layered into a sweet custard filling. And do you know what it doesn’t need? A Michelob Ultra.
10. Hawaiian Haystacks
Despite their tropical name, Hawaiian haystacks are an American creation built around rice, creamy chicken gravy, and a buffet of toppings. Recipes vary, too, which means you could see anything from cheese and pineapple to chow mein noodles or shredded coconut. Either way, that's already an eccentric mix without stuffing a Michelob Ultra among them.
