Is that “best by” date really the deadline, or is your food still safe to eat? In this video, we’re looking at 10 foods you can often eat well past the best-by date and 10 foods you really should not risk. Some pantry staples mostly lose quality over time, while others can become unsafe even if they still look or smell normal. We’ll cover foods that can often last beyond the date when stored properly, including dry pasta, white rice, unopened canned vegetables and beans, cereal, crackers, peanut butter, honey, vinegar, soy sauce, and buttermilk. Then we’ll look at foods you should be much more careful with, including deli meat, fresh seafood, bagged salad greens, soft cheeses, milk, cooked leftovers, ready-to-eat refrigerated meals, cooked rice or pasta, fresh poultry, and unpasteurized juice or raw milk products. The big lesson? A best-by date is not always the same as a safety warning, but storage, moisture, smell, texture, packaging, and the type of food all matter. When it comes to high-risk refrigerated foods, it’s usually better to toss it than gamble.
