20 Fast-Food Items With More Sugar Than You’d Expect

20 Fast-Food Items With More Sugar Than You’d Expect

Sugar Shows Up in Some Very Sneaky Places

Fast-food sugar is easy to spot when it comes in a milkshake, a frosted coffee, or a pastry. It's a lot less obvious when it's hiding in buns, breakfast bread, sauces, or even salad dressing. That's why some sandwiches and savory combos end up carrying more sugar than you would guess from the name alone. The surprise usually is not that these items contain sugar at all, but that the total can climb higher than most people expect for foods that sound like they should be salty. Here are 20 fast-food menu items that contain a surprising amount of sugar.

1. Chick-fil-A Grilled Chicken Club Sandwich

The word “grilled” makes this sound like one of the safer picks on the menu, which is exactly why the sugar count catches people off guard. Chick-fil-A lists the Grilled Chicken Club Sandwich at 12 grams of sugar, which is a real number for something most people mentally file under "light lunch." It is still a sandwich, but the bun and sauces are doing more sweetening than the name suggests.

2. Chick-fil-A Grilled Chicken Sandwich

This one lands just behind the club version, with 11 grams of sugar on Chick-fil-A’s nutrition page. You are probably ordering it for the grilled chicken, not because you are chasing anything remotely sweet. Even so, the bread and seasoning profile quietly push the sugar higher than a lot of people would guess.

3. Subway Veggie Patty

A veggie sandwich tends to project wholesome and sensible, which makes the nutrition panel a little more surprising. Subway’s U.S. nutrition data lists a 6-inch Veggie Patty sub at 10 grams of sugar. That doesn't make it total junk food, but it proves that “vegetarian” is not the same thing as “super healthy.”

4. Subway Club

Cold cuts and vegetables do not exactly sound like a sugar-heavy lunch. Still, Subway’s nutrition table puts a 6-inch Subway Club at 9 grams of sugar, which is more than a lot of people would expect from a classic deli-style order. Once bread enters the picture, fast food has a habit of getting sweeter in a hurry.

5. Subway All-American Club

The All-American Club looks like the kind of sandwich that should be all meat, cheese, and no nonsense, which is what makes that 9 grams of sugar so surprising. It ends up being another reminder that sandwich sugar often hides in the bread before you even get to the sauces.

6. Subway Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki

This one is not subtle once you read the description, because Subway literally calls out teriyaki-glazed chicken and sweet onion sauce, which brings the sugar content up to 16 grams for a six-inch. That's still a surprising number for a sandwich that's savory first, not a dessert item.

7. Panera Smokehouse BBQ Chicken on Artisan Ciabatta

Barbecue sauce is one of those ingredients that should probably never be trusted. Panera’s nutrition guide lists the whole Smokehouse BBQ Chicken on Artisan Ciabatta at 33 grams of sugar, which is a lot for a sandwich that sounds mostly smoky and savory.

8. Panera Bacon Double Take on Black Pepper Focaccia

A breakfast sandwich with double bacon does not sound like it would drift anywhere near dessert territory. Panera’s nutrition guide, however, lists the Bacon Double Take on Black Pepper Focaccia at 28 grams of sugar. That is the kind of number that makes you look at breakfast bread a little differently.

9. Panera Bacon, Egg & Cheese on a Croissant

This one is a little sneakier because it sounds almost plain by comparison. Panera’s nutrition guide lists the Bacon, Egg & Cheese on Croissant at 7 grams of sugar, which is not outrageous but still more than many people would expect from a buttery breakfast sandwich. The croissant is probably mostly to blame here.

10. Starbucks Eggs & Cheddar Protein Box

Protein boxes have a healthy halo that can make people forget to look at the sugar. Starbucks lists the Eggs & Cheddar Protein Box at 21 grams of sugar, thanks to apples, grapes, muesli bread, and honey peanut butter all showing up in one package. It is not pretending to be candy, but it is definitely sweeter than the eggs-and-cheese label alone would lead you to believe.

11. Starbucks Cheese & Fruit Protein Box

This one clocks in at 17 grams of sugar, according to Starbucks’ nutrition page. That is not shocking once you remember there is fruit in the box, but it is still more than many people picture when they think “cheese snack.” The savory cheeses make it feel balanced, which is probably why the sugar does not seem obvious at first glance.

12. Starbucks Cheese Trio Protein Box

This might be the most misleadingly savory-sounding item in the whole batch. Starbucks lists the Cheese Trio Protein Box at 40 grams of sugar, largely because it comes with dried apricots and cranberries alongside the cheese and crackers. If you just hear “cheese trio,” you are not exactly bracing for a sugar number like that.

13. Starbucks Chicken, Maple Butter & Egg Sandwich

Starbucks does not bury the clue here, because the name literally includes maple butter. Even so, people often hear “chicken and egg sandwich” and assume the sweetness will stay minimal. It contains six grams of sugar, which is a lot considering the small size of the sandwich.

14. Starbucks PB&J Protein Box

Peanut butter and jelly are already telling you this one is not going to play it straight. Starbucks also builds the box with honey wheat bread, fruit, Greek yogurt, ranch dip, and chocolate-covered raisins, so the sweetness is coming from several directions at once. It may be packaged as a balanced grab-and-go meal, but its 30 grams of sugar place it closer to dessert territory.

15. McDonald’s Sausage McGriddles

McGriddles are almost unfair in this conversation because the sweetness is built right into the bread. McDonald’s describes the Sausage McGriddles as sausage served on warm griddle cakes, so you are not getting a neutral bun here. It contains 11 grams of sugar, which is quite substantial for a savory breakfast option.

16. McDonald’s Sausage, Egg & Cheese McGriddles

Adding egg and cheese does not cancel out the fact that the sandwich still sits on those sweet griddle cakes. McDonald’s describes this one as sweet and savory for a reason. People may think they are choosing a more substantial breakfast sandwich, but the sugar is still very much part of the appeal.

17. McDonald’s Bacon, Egg & Cheese McGriddles

The bacon version works the same trick with a slightly different filling. McDonald’s again pairs the sandwich with sweet griddle cakes, which means the sweetness is not hiding in a sauce packet or a coffee on the side. It is baked into the whole personality of the item.

18. Arby’s Chicken Bacon Swiss Sandwich

A crispy chicken sandwich already has enough going on, but Arby’s adds honey mustard and puts the whole thing on a buttery brioche bun, which is where that 10 grams of sugar comes from. The sandwich never calls itself sweet, yet honey mustard does not exactly arrive empty-handed.

19. Arby’s Roast Turkey Ranch & Bacon Sandwich

Turkey and ranch sound pretty standard until you notice the bread choice. Arby’s serves this sandwich on Honey Wheat bread, delivering 16 grams of sugar. It is one of those items where the sugar probably feels invisible while you are eating it, which is how these things always get you.

20. Dunkin’ Maple Sugar Bacon Breakfast Sandwich

Dunkin’ is not even pretending this is subtle, because the menu description says the sandwich is packed with sweet caramelized Maple Sugar Bacon on a croissant. Even so, that 12 grams is surprising because people still tend to file breakfast sandwiches under salty comfort food instead of sneaky sugar bombs.
