Some Foods Need a Little Help
Technically, you can eat almost anything plain, but that doesn’t mean you should. Certain foods are practically built for butter, sauce, toppings, or whatever’s in reach—stripping all of that leaves a pretty disappointing meal. From pancakes to chicken nuggets, these 20 foods deserve better than being served in the buff.
1. Pancakes
A stack of pancakes is only good if you slather them in something. Even if you don’t crave the sweet nectar of syrup, butter, berries, whipped cream, or even peanut butter gives those fluffy guys the moisture and sweetness they're missing. If you're going to make a stack, there's no reason to stop before the toppings arrive.
2. French Fries
The best fries have salt and crispy edges working in their favor, so eating an entire order without any dip gets boring fast. Ketchup is the obvious choice, but even stuff like ranch, garlic aioli, cheese sauce, and the odd shake all have loyal followings! Nobody needs to prove a point by eating their fries dry.
3. Oatmeal
Oatmeal is one of the easiest breakfasts to customize, which makes eating it plain all the more confusing. Brown sugar and cinnamon can make it perfect for fall, while berries, syrup, or peanut butter give the bowl more personality. Without any toppings, you're mostly left with a soggy bowl that tastes of nothing.

4. Chicken Nuggets
Okay, yes, the nugget itself provides lots of crunch and salt, but dipping sauce is part of the fun! You have so many options, too. Barbecue sauce, honey mustard, ranch, sweet and sour sauce, and buffalo sauce? Serving nuggets without even one is cruel and unusual punishment.
5. Chicken Breast
Chicken breast is useful precisely because it takes so well to everything. We’re talking marinades, spices, pan sauces, and every condiment in the refrigerator. Who has the courage to strip away all of that flavor? All you need is a spoonful of pesto or barbecue sauce to immediately rescue any dry breast.
6. Waffles
Waffles come with little built-in pockets that practically demand to be filled, so leaving them bare is even worse than leaving pancakes in the lurch. Maple syrup is a classic, but don’t be shy about trying fruit compote, powdered sugar, chocolate spread, or even everyone’s favorite: fried chicken!
7. Grits
Southern cooks figured out long ago that grits are much better once butter, shrimp, gravy, or a generous sprinkle of spices enters the picture. What’s worst about leaving them bare is that the plain version is mild enough that the texture gets more attention than the flavor. Even a little black pepper can completely change the bowl.

8. Hot Dogs
A bare hot dog? We don’t think so! You have so many condiments to choose from, so there’s no reason to ignore all of them. Mustard, relish, onions, chili, sauerkraut, cheese, and countless regional toppings exist because that sausage can handle plenty of flavor.
9. Rice Cakes
The appeal of a rice cake is mostly what you choose to put on top of it. Let’s be honest—eating a plain one is just torturing yourself. Peanut butter and banana turn it into a filling snack, cream cheese makes it savory, and avocado with chili flakes gives it some actual heat. Eaten straight from the package, however, there's very little happening.
10. Biscuits
A warm biscuit has plenty going for it, but just imagine how much better that warm treat would taste with jam, honey, or gravy. The interior is particularly good at soaking up something without losing its structure, so if there are preserves anywhere nearby, this isn't the time for restraint.
11. Tofu
Tofu's mild flavor only works because it can absorb an array of additional ingredients. Think soy sauce, chili crisp, sesame dressing, or a well-seasoned marinade. Serving it untouched is just asking a modest ingredient to do a job it was never meant to handle alone.
12. Baked Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes naturally have more flavor than regular potatoes, but that isn’t enough to just eat them as is. They’re also as versatile as their yellow cousin, so you have plenty of options to spice things up. Butter and cinnamon keep things familiar, while black beans, feta, or even chili can turn one into a full meal.
13. Mozzarella Sticks
Mozzarella sticks without marinara are like eating pizza without cheese. The tomato sauce cuts through the coating and melted cheese, stopping all that richness from overloading your palate after a few bites. Ranch may start an argument at the table, but at least it's better than no dip at all.

14. Couscous
Plain couscous can technically accompany dinner, but nobody’s going back for seconds. IF you think couscous is bland, that’s probably because you’ve ignored all the lemon, herbs, or even flavorful broth that jazzes things up. Not to mention, since couscous absorbs flavor so easily, leaving it untouched almost takes more effort.

15. Hard-Boiled Eggs
We know health nuts everywhere gripe about sodium, but a hard-boiled egg straight from the shell isn't exactly a glowing plate. Salt and pepper help, but if you’re watching your health, don’t be afraid to mix in hot sauce, everything bagel seasoning, or a little mayo. The yolk especially appreciates some backup.
16. Steamed Broccoli
There’s a reason you hated broccoli as a kid—it had no flavor! This poor veggie shouldn't get blamed for being boring when the real culprit is whoever served it sweating from a bag. A squeeze of lemon, garlic butter, or even just some salt makes steamed florets actually appealing.

17. Bagels
A good bagel has plenty of flavor already, so we get the appeal of ripping into it plain. Eating one without any spread, though, makes breakfast much drier. Cream cheese is always a safe bet, although butter, smoked salmon, jam, and eggs all provide excellent alternatives.
18. Chicken Wings
Few orders are sadder than wings without sauce or a cup of dip. Some places have literally dozens of options to choose from, so there’s no way you prefer them plain! Buffalo, barbecue, garlic Parmesan, honey garlic, and lemon pepper all prove just how well wings respond to bold flavors.
19. Corn Tortillas
A warm tortilla has a decent enough flavor, but it was obviously meant for something more substantial. Think of the carnitas. What about grilled fish, beans, and cheese? They can all turn that simple round into something you actually crave.
20. Pasta
Pasta needs more than hot water and optimism to become dinner. As such a bland base, you have all kinds of options to choose from, like tomato sauce, pesto, browned butter, or a basic coating of Parmesan. Whatever you choose, those boosters give the noodles the richness and seasoning they need.
