Plant-Based Goodies: 20 Foods That Are Surprisingly Vegan

Enjoy Without Fear

Some folks avoid the vegan lifestyle due to fear of finding convenient foods. Fear not! Many snacks, cereals, and other goodies on this list are classified as vegan in one way or another. If the company itself doesn’t say something is vegan, the rest of the internet will fact-check. You have an animal-friendly world right at your fingertips.

1. Oreos

The king of cookies, Oreo's formula is completely free of animal byproducts. They do state that while cross-contamination is a possibility, the cookie itself is safe for animal lovers everywhere. Vegan-friendly flavors include the classic Oreo, Double Stuffed, and Golden Oreos, to name a few.

2. Ritz Crackers

The original Ritz crackers are considered vegan, and the company has even provided a vegan logo on the appropriate packaging. However, it’s best to avoid any Ritz cracker that has cheese or butter included in their name, for obvious reasons.

3. Fritos

Original Fritos, Fritos Scoops, and Fritos Lightly Salted are, in fact, vegan. The base ingredients for Fritos are corn and corn oil, so they’re perfectly safe to eat. Avoid other Fritos flavors, however, as some of them include cheese, whey, and honey.

5. Sweet Chili Doritos

Considered "accidentally vegan,” Doritos doesn’t label any of its flavored chips as a vegan option. This is likely due to the risk of cross-contamination, so it’s important to keep an eye on the nutrition label, as every brand will change its recipes from time to time.

6. A1 Steak Sauce

Steak not included. A1 Steak Sauce, or HP Sauce for our Canadians, is safe for vegan consumption. The sauce includes tomato purée, vinegar, corn syrup, salt, raisin paste, crushed orange purée, dried garlic and onions, spices, celery seed, and caramel color. Many vegans like to include this sauce on burritos, meat-free meatballs, or baked potatoes, to name a few.
