The joys of growing a new life do, unfortunately, come with some major drawbacks. Limited coffee, soft cheese, deli meat, or undercooked animal products are all items you’re told to avoid.

This also sadly means sushi. The most enjoyable part of most sushi meals is the raw fish, so it only makes sense that it’s widely avoided for the duration you’re with a child.

However, not every sushi roll needs to be avoided. There are many fish-free rolls that you can enjoy during this special time in your life.

Avocado Rolls

The delicious millennial food of choice is an excellent filling for any maki roll. Avocado rolls are simple, healthy, and delicious for the veggie sushi lover. They usually only contain three ingredients: avocado, nori, and rice. That said, you can always spice up the flavor with a bit of spicy dressing or wasabi in your soy sauce.

Cucumber Rolls

The cucumber roll is also a classic when it comes to basic maki. This simple roll will not only curb your sushi cravings but will also ensure you’re getting some vegetables with your meal. It doesn’t just have to be cucumbers, either. You can also get these famed rolls with carrots, bell pepper, or other veggies.

Sweet Potato Tempura Rolls

This versatile roll wraps delicious flavor and a good dose of vitamin A all into one simple roll. And the best part is their versatility. If you’re really craving a familiar fishy flavor, you can get the potato fried to mimic tempura. Alternatively, you can have it in a puree style, including fixings like avocado, sesame seeds, and a soy sauce drizzle.

Mango and Vegetable Rolls

Who said fruit doesn’t work in a maki roll? Mango is a popular ingredient at most sushi spots, and offers a unique flavor profile when regular veggie rolls start to get boring. You can keep things fresh by mixing mango and cucumber, or feel free to go the savory and sweet route by adding imitation crab into the mix.

Imitation Crab Rolls

So you can’t have raw fish, but you could have fake seafood! Imitation crab is a popular option when real crab doesn’t work. Imitation crab is made of egg whites, minced Alaska pollock, and potato. Luckily, the fish in this roll is thoroughly cooked, so you’re at no risk of disease or infection when consuming it.

Imitation crab is also an excellent choice when included with any of the above rolls. Feel free to add this seafood replacement to your avocado, cucumber, sweet potato, or mango roll for some extra protein and flavor.

Other Sushi Rolls You Can Eat

  • Asparagus rolls
  • Fully cooked salmon rolls
  • Yam rolls
  • Tamago rolls

What You Should Avoid

  • Make sure there’s little to no cross-contamination with raw fish when your order is being prepped.
  • Make sure all the seafood you’re eating is fully cooked, and that the vegetables are fully washed.
  • Double-check that any ingredients you’re eating are low in mercury. Too much mercury can harm a fetus’s brain and nervous system development.
