A kitchen witch is a person whose whole practice revolves around growing and making food. It involves infusing food with intention, understanding the magical properties of herbs and spices, and using kitchen tools as ritual items. They act as a physical embodiment of the home, creating hearty, filling, and delicious meals into a nurturing and protective practice.
Being a kitchen witch is more than cooking; it's about fostering a connection to the earth, our seasonal cycles, and creating a safe and welcoming space within your home. If that sounds like something you’re interested in, here’s how to start following the kitchen witch’s way of life.
Understanding Ingredients
All foods, particularly herbs and spices, are aligned with certain magical properties. A dash of cinnamon for abundance, lavender for peace, basil for luck, rosemary for love, and so on and so forth.
We don’t expect you to remember the magical properties for every herb you come across, but a recipe book (the kitchen witch’s grimoire) with little notes may be a step in the right direction. There are plenty of books, websites, and blogs you can visit to get a better idea of which herbs contain which properties.
Mindfulness
We don’t just mean meditating or writing about your day. For a kitchen witch and witches in general, mindfulness means also taking time to connect with the earth. Ground yourself by planting your feet in the grass, shop for organic and/or local ingredients, and try to grow some of your own plants, if you have the space.
Infusions
A kitchen witch thrives in, shockingly, the kitchen. This is where your spellcasting will primarily take place. Before each meal, you should set an intention about what you’re hoping to achieve, whether it be love, luck, prosperity, positivity, etc. Visualizing your intentions, blessing ingredients, and choosing the appropriate recipes are all a part of this process.
Using Tools
While other types of witches may use an athame or a wand to cast circles, you have a big spoon. With your spoon at the ready, you can draw in feelings like love, luck, and positivity, banish negativity, or infuse your dish with protection.
Caring For Your Space
The kitchen is one of the main rooms of the home, and you must care for it as much as any other room of the house. Keep it clean, organized, and comforting, create wards for the space, and treat it with respect. It also doesn’t hurt to use natural cleaners for the space, if and when you can. Vinegar is your friend!
Remember that building a practice takes time and is incredibly personal. You don’t have to do what that blogger does, or follow a ritual step by step. The important thing is that you figure out what works best for you.
