The Zero-Sugar Sodas That Deserve More Credit
Diet soda has come a long way from the thin, sharp cans many people remember. Some newer versions are not only crisp, but they’re also flavorful, and way more balanced than you’d think. The thing is, where some zero-sugar sodas flew, others crashed and burned, and we’re here to break down which ones are and aren’t worth your time!
1. Coke Zero Sugar
Coke Zero Sugar has become the obvious pick for anyone who wants the familiar taste without the heavy sweetness. It keeps the caramel notes and the fizzy bite, but it finishes cleaner, making it easier to sip when you’re trying to stay healthy.
2. Pepsi Zero Sugar
We’re not here to tell you one is better than the other—we’re just saying that Pepsi Zero Sugar is a strong contender against Coke! It tastes bolder than Diet Pepsi, and that stronger cola flavor helps it compete more directly with the regular stuff. It has the bright sweetness people expect, but the zero-sugar version feels sharper and more refreshing when it’s ice-cold.
3. Dr Pepper Zero Sugar
We know it sounds sacrilege to touch the original, but Dr Pepper Zero Sugar does a surprisingly good job of keeping the brand’s signature cherry, vanilla, and spice flavors intact. You still get the oddball charm that makes this can stand out, just in a more drinkable form.
4. Sprite Zero Sugar
Sprite Zero Sugar brings everything you could want to the table: lemon-lime sparkle without the sugary coating that regular Sprite leaves behind. It tastes especially good over ice, too, because the citrus comes through crisp instead of sticky.
5. Mountain Dew Zero Sugar
Love it or leave it, Mountain Dew is a polarizing option for some people, but there’s no denying that the zero-sugar version is actually pretty good! It keeps the citrus punch that makes the original so recognizable, but it reins in the sweetness just enough to satisfy.
6. A&W Zero Sugar Root Beer
A&W Zero Sugar Root Beer is smooth, creamy, and close enough to the original that you won’t miss the sugar at all. The vanilla-style sweetness comes through nicely, and all that fizz keeps it from feeling flat or overly heavy. You can still serve it in a chilled glass, too!
7. Sunkist Zero Sugar Orange
Sunkist Zero Sugar Orange has the same orange flavor you want, but it somehow tastes better without the extra sugar. We all know that regular orange soda can get too sweet, so this version stays punchy and refreshing.
8. Canada Dry Zero Sugar Ginger Ale
Canada Dry Zero Sugar Ginger Ale has all the gentle ginger flavor you love, just without the trip to the bathroom. Oddly enough, the zero-sugar version has a lighter finish, which works way better than the original does.
9. 7UP Zero Sugar
7UP Zero Sugar has a clean lemon-lime flavor that feels a touch less sweet than the original, and that’s exactly what makes it better. You wouldn’t think it to look at it, but the flavor stays familiar, and the lighter finish makes it feel more refreshing.
10. Canada Dry Zero Sugar Cranberry Ginger Ale
No one said zero-sugar meant zero flavor! Canada Dry Zero Sugar Cranberry Ginger Ale brings a tart cranberry twist that makes the regular stuff heavier by comparison. The flavor also gives it enough personality to feel seasonal, but the zero-sugar add-on is enough to entice us year-round.
As much as we love the diet stuff, some rely so heavily on a syrupy body or a nostalgic finish that they’re missing the thing people liked most in the first place. Let’s dive into a few “healthier” options that tried and failed.
1. Diet Coke
Diet Coke has a loyal following, sure, but that doesn’t help the taste. Its lighter, sharper flavor became its own thing, which works for fans but doesn’t deliver the round sweetness people expect from the classic. Not to mention, we all know the story with aspartame by now.
2. Pepsi Wild Cherry Zero Sugar
Pepsi tried its best with the cherry flavor upfront, but the regular Pepsi Wild Cherry is just way smoother. The sugared version lets the fruit note blend into the actual cola instead of sitting right on top. Okay, it’s drinkable enough, but you’ll notice the original has a better balance.
3. Fanta Zero Sugar Orange
It’s okay, Fanta—you didn’t need to do the whole zero-sugar thing! The orange variety thankfully has the citrus, but it doesn’t capture the juicy sweetness that makes regular Fanta Orange so popular. In reality, when the sugar’s gone, the flavor’s a little flatter than you’d expect.
4. Starry Zero Sugar
Starry Zero Sugar is crisp, clean, and easy to pour over ice…but is it good? Not really. The regular Starry has a far more enjoyable lemon-lime blend, and it feels a bit more rounded. This zero-sugar version works in a pinch, but it doesn’t bring the same sparkle.

5. Mello Yello Zero Sugar
We’re not mellow at all with this one! This is one of those sodas where the sugar helps carry the whole flavor instead of simply making it sweeter. Without that extra body, the zero-sugar version doesn’t hold a candle to the original.
6. Diet Barq’s Root Beer
If you’re going to tweak root beer, you need to do it right! But Diet Barq’s Root Beer doesn’t hit with the same boldness as the regular version. Original Barq’s has a sharper, more assertive taste that makes it stand out from creamier competitors, including its own healthier alternatives.

7. Diet Orange Crush
Another orange bites the dust. Diet Orange Crush has plenty of flavor at first, but the finish doesn’t hold up as well. Like it or not, regular Orange Crush is a little over-the-top in exactly the way orange soda is supposed to be—the diet version tones that down.

8. Diet Sunkist Grape
Diet Sunkist Grape has a recognizable grape-soda profile, but the flavor doesn’t feel as plush as its regular cousin. The original leans into candy-like sweetness, sure, but that’s part of its charm. Without that sweetness, the diet version is just a less fun version of the soda it’s trying to replace.
9. Big Red Zero Sugar
Go big or go home! Big Red Zero Sugar gets close to the brand’s creamy flavor, but the original is much more memorable. Let’s be honest: Regular Big Red has a smooth, sweet finish that helps its unusual flavor make sense. The zero-sugar version doesn’t have the soft richness.
10. Faygo Diet Redpop
To its credit, Faygo Diet Redpop gives you the familiar strawberry flavor—if only that mattered. The regular Redpop has a stronger personality, and the diet stuff is more reserved than the name suggests. It’s not a bad can to have around, but the original is where our hearts are.
