Ready, Set, Eat: The 20 Craziest Food-Eating Records

Think You Know The Meaning Of "All You Can Eat"?

Most of us think of eating as a way to appease our hunger and enjoy something tasty, but that's not the case for everyone. Welcome to the weird and wacky world of competitive eating: where people test the limits of their guts and give their digestive system the workout of its life. Just like athletes, "professional eaters" push their bodies to the extreme, but instead of exercising, they do it by scarfing down way too much food. From mountains of hot dogs to an inhuman amount of hot peppers, here are 20 crazy food-eating records that will not only make your jaw drop, but it'll make it hurt.

1. 76 Hot Dogs in 10 Minutes

One of the most renowned professional eaters, Joey Chestnut, holds the record for eating the most amount of hotdogs and buns in 10 minutes, eating 76. Just last year, he broke his own record, putting back 83 for a Netflix Labor Day event.

2. 165 Pierogies in 8 Minutes

We could easily crush a bag of frozen pierogies in one sitting, even though it says "serves four" on the bag, but Joey Chestnut took it many levels further. He ate 165 pierogies in eight minutes at the Horseshoe World Pierogi Eating Championship in 2014, setting an inaugural world record.

3. 19 Pizzas in 10 Minutes

Geoffrey Esper holds the record for eating the most amount of pizzas in 10 minutes. He consumed 19.25 9-inch pies. Once again, Joey Chestnut came in second with 17.

5. 47 Grilled Cheese Sandwiches in 10 Minutes

How do you like your grilled cheese sandwiches? With cheddar, American, or in copious quantities? Clearly, Joey Chestnut chose the latter when he scarfed down 47 of them in 10 minutes.

6. Three Pounds of Beef Tongue in 12 Minutes

If you follow a Western diet, the idea of eating any amount of beef tongue may sound strange to you, let alone three pounds of it. However, Cookie Jarvis clearly wasn't opposed to it when he did just that in 12 minutes.

7. 59 Donuts in 8 Minutes

James Webb holds the record for eating the most amount of donuts in 8 minutes at 59.5.  In case you were wondering, the donuts were plain glazed, not cream-filled.

8. 30 Gyros in 10 Minutes

The Greek wrap-style sandwich is no doubt delicious. We'd be happy to chow down on one or two in a sitting, but 30? That's how many Joey Chestnut ate in just 10 minutes.

9. 7 Sticks of Butter in 5 Minutes

Don Lerman consumed 28 ounces (seven sticks) of butter in five minutes in 2002. That's around 13 times the daily recommended fat intake.

10. 50 Carolina Reaper Peppers in 6 Minutes

Carolina Reaper Peppers are some of the spiciest known to man, with a rating of 2.2 million on the Scoville scale. In a show of inhuman spice tolerance, Mike Jack consumed 50 of them in 6 minutes.

13. 113 Pancakes in 8 Minutes

14. 384 Gyoza in 10 Minutes

We can totally imagine eating 384 gyoza. They are delicious after all, but in 10 minutes? That's just what Joey Chestnut did at the Day-Lee Foods World Gyoza Eating Championship in 2014.

16. 128 Ounces of Mayo in 8 Minutes

We enjoy a smear of mayonnaise on a sandwich as much as the next person, but imagining someone eating spoonfuls of the stuff makes us cringe. In an impressive but hard-to-watch feat, Oleg Zhornitskiy ate four 32-ounce bowls of mayo in 8 minutes.

17. 274 Jalapenos in 8 Minutes

Our approach to jalapenos is sprinkling a couple on top of our pizza and feeling hardcore, not eating them by themselves in droves. We guess Pat Bertoletti, who holds the world record for the most pickled jalapenos eaten in 8 minutes, at 275, feels differently.

18. 23 Pickles in 1 Minute

Leah Shutkever holds the record for the most pickles eaten in one minute at 23, but that's not the only pickle-related record that's been set. Pat Bertoletti (yes, the same guy who ate all those jalapenos) ate 5 pounds 11 ounces of sour pickles in 6 minutes at the World Pickle Eating Championship.

19. 9 Pounds of SPAM in 8 Minutes

At the SPAMARAMA, World SPAM Eating Championship (yes, that's a thing), in Austin, Texas, Geoffrey Esper set the record for the most SPAM eaten in 8 minutes. He consumed 9.75 pounds of the stuff, well above the previous record of six pounds in 12 minutes.

20. 34,000 Big Macs in 52 Years

We're not sure if Don Gorske was trying to break the world record by consuming multiple Big Macs every day or if he just loves them that much, but no one comes close to his lifetime achievement. The self-professed "ultimate Big Mac fan" has consumed 34,000 and counting over the span of 52 years.
