Desserts Worth And Not Worth Sharing
Everyone knows desserts are the best way to close out a delicious meal, which is why bringing the right thing to a potluck is so important. There are a lot of factors you have to consider besides taste; is it easy to share, serve, and leave on the table? To make sure you bring the best possible dessert, here are 10 you shouldn't make and 10 that will get instantly devoured.
1. Layer Cakes With Tall Frosting
Sure, layered cakes look impressive, which might fit the theme of potlucks, but they're a lot more work than you probably want for a casual gathering. They can become awkward when cutting into them, requiring careful slicing, planning, and steady hands. Not to mention, transferring them from home is a huge hassle!
2. Whole Cream Pies
Cream pies are delicious, but as far as holding up on the dessert table, they simply don't. Once the first few slices come out, the filling softens, spreads, and makes the remaining pie impossible to serve neatly. If anything, it won't look like a dessert anymore!
3. Molten Chocolate Cakes
This dessert is a treat when they're served fresh and warm, but at a potluck, this individual dessert is difficult to get right. They're a poor fit because the molten lava which is the star of the show, might just turn cold and solidify after sitting out and being served at different times by the guests.
4. Pavlova
Pavlova can be beautiful, but its crisp shell and soft interior make it fragile in hectic potluck settings. Not only might it accidentally crack during transport, soften as it sits, or become difficult to portion once topped with cream and fruit, it's not the kind of dessert you want sitting out for a long period of time.
5. Ice Cream Cakes
This dessert doesn't belong at potlucks for an obvious reason: too much depends heavily on timing and freezer space. If there isn’t room to keep one frozen, it can start melting before everyone finishes their meal. No one wants to see a puddle of a dessert once they're looking forward to something sweet!
6. Tiramisu
Tiramisu is a popular favorite thanks to its creamy and rich flavor, but it can be tricky to serve cleanly at a potluck. The soft layers rarely hold their shape, especially after the dish has been sitting out or handled by several guests. And since it needs refrigeration, it can also raise practical concerns if there's no fridge around.
7. Baked Alaska
Baked Alaska has a lot of flair, but that's only if you get the timing right. At a potluck, this combination of frozen and toasted topping can be hard to nail, especially if you're not serving it immediately. Seems like too much of a headache for a casual event!
8. Crème Brûlée
Because crème brûlée is usually served in individual ramekins, that already makes it less convenient for a potluck. The caramelized top is best right after it’s torched, and it can soften if it sits too long. Trying to get it done at the right time for every guest is far too much of a hassle.
9. Soufflé
There's no dessert that cares more about timing than the soufflé; there just isn't much flexibility! It needs to be served soon after baking, and its texture changes as it sits. Because potlucks rarely run on a precise dessert schedule, this is a risky choice even when it’s made perfectly.
10. Large Fruit Tarts
A large fruit tart often looks really stunning, but cutting it into neat portions is difficult. The crust may crack, the pastry cream might start leaking out, and the fruit topping is hard to split and doesn’t always stay in place once slices are removed.
1. Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies
Chocolate chip cookies rarely need an explanation. They're dependable, reliable, and always a hit with a majority of the crowd. Guests can grab one without needing a plate, which makes them easy to enjoy while chatting or moving through the room.
2. Fudgy Brownie Bites
Serving brownies in bites instead offers a convenient dessert that everyone can pick up easily. It even works well for their portion size because it makes these rich treats easier to manage. It's just the right amount of fudgy chocolate!
3. Lemon Bars
For something a bit more bright and vibrant, lemon bars work excellently at potlucks because they don't feel so filling. After tons of delicious food, a bit of zestiness is what many people crave! It's the right balance of sweet and tanginess that everyone is familiar with and enjoys.
4. Rice Krispies Treats
Sometimes homey and simple is the way to go! Rice Krispies treats are casual, nostalgic, and almost too easy to eat. They don’t require utensils, and they hold up well on a dessert table without extra care. Because they’re light and chewy, guests may grab one even when they think they’re too full for dessert.
5. Mini Cupcakes
Mini cupcakes solve the biggest problem with regular cupcakes: they keep the portion small. They come in the perfect size so guests can sample them without committing too much stomach space. They're also so easy to decorate to fit whatever potluck theme is going on.
6. Peanut Butter Blossoms
A delicious and nostalgic treat, peanut butter blossoms both look adorable and have a beloved flavor combination that many people love. The cookie itself is super comforting, which is perfect after a hearty meal. As long as they’re clearly labeled for guests with allergies, they’re often one of the first cookies to vanish.

7. Banana Pudding Cups
Banana pudding cups are popular because each serving is already portioned and ready to take. There's no scooping necessary, and the less work, the happier guests are. Besides, who could resist the combination of creamy pudding, bananas, and wafers?

8. Apple Crumble Bars
Apple crumble bars offer the cozy flavor of an apple dessert without requiring a bowl or spoon. They’re easier to serve than pie, less sweet than many other treats, and usually hold their shape better on a crowded table.
9. Chocolate-Covered Strawberries
Need something special yet simple to make? Chocolate-covered strawberries are the way to go. These look especially elegant and expensive, but require few ingredients to make. They also sit well on a big table and are easy to serve!
10. Snickerdoodle Cookies
Snickerdoodles have a warm cinnamon-sugar flavor that appeals to a wide range of guests, whether they're young or old. It's not hard to see why given that they’re soft, simple, and easy to pick up, which makes them ideal for a busy potluck table.
